H. Dunbar Hoskins Jr., MD is an internationally recognized glaucoma specialist, having authored or coauthored more than 70 publications and presented more than 300 invited lectures, and the former Executive Vice President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a position he held from January 1, 1993 to March 31, 2009. He received an Academy Honor Award in 1979 and a Senior Honor Award in 1989 and Distinguished Service Award in 1999.
He has held numerous other positions in ophthalmology, medicine and business. Among the highlights: Founding Director of the American Glaucoma Society, founder and Director of the Foundation for Glaucoma Research and Secretary-Treasurer of the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, and Chairman of the Advisory Committee to the International Council of Ophthalmology. He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco.
Dr. Hoskins was the recipient of the 2009 Catalyst Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Glaucoma Research Foundation acknowledging exemplary leadership in sustaining innovative research and education. The Award was presented as the centerpiece of the Foundation’s 31st Anniversary benefit celebration held January 28, 2009 in San Francisco. He is one of the founders of the Glaucoma Research Foundation and served on the Board of Directors from its inception in 1978 until 2016.
