A brisk walk offers a simple place to begin. At a moderate intensity, you should breathe faster but still feel able to hold a conversation. People who currently exercise very little can start with shorter walks and gradually increase their time, pace, or frequency.

Regular physical activity also supports heart health, blood pressure management, sleep, mobility, emotional well-being, and weight management. Those broader benefits make exercise worthwhile even as researchers continue investigating its specific effects on glaucoma.

Exercise Safely With Glaucoma

Not every form of exercise affects eye pressure in the same way. Head-down yoga poses can temporarily increase IOP, and heavy lifting and breath-holding may also cause eye pressure spikes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends avoiding head-down positions and using proper breathing techniques during strength training.

Talk with your ophthalmologist before beginning or changing an exercise program, particularly if you have advanced glaucoma, unstable eye pressure, another medical condition, or recent eye surgery.
