Why is a visual field test important?

The value of visual field testing for glaucoma is twofold.

  • First, the test may reveal subtle damage to vision and thus confirm the first diagnosis of glaucoma.
  • Second, the examination provides a baseline to help determine whether or not the pressure control is adequate.

A deterioration in visual field, in combination with other findings, may mean more medication or surgery is necessary.
